Fireballs Recorded on September 19th and 20th, 2026

Two fireballs were registered by the detectors operated by the SMART Project at various observatories across Spain.

It is worth mentioning that the event on September 20th occurred during sunset, with ample natural light, making it even more spectacular.

The object on September 19 was recorded at 02:14 UT, while the one on September 20 was recorded at 18:47 UT.

The outdoor cameras operated by the Calar Alto Observatory in Almería captured both events.

The preliminary analysis carried out by Professor José María Madiedo (IAA-CSIC) has yielded the following data for both events:

path19Fireball of September 19 at 02:14 UT:

  • Type of event: asteroidal
  • Initial velocity: 97,000 km/h
  • Initial altitude: 98 km
  • Final altitude: 42 km
  • Stations that recorded it: Calar Alto (Almería), Huelva, La Hita (Toledo), Sierra Nevada (Granada), La Sagra (Granada), Seville and Mazagón (Huelva).
  • Location: Gulf of Cádiz

Fireball of September 20 at 18:47 UT:path20

  • Event type: cometary
  • Initial speed: 65,000 km/h
  • Initial altitude: 91 km
  • Final altitude: 31 km
  • Stations that recorded it: Calar Alto (Almería), La Sagra (Granada), Olocau (Valencia) and Mazagón (Huelva)
  • Location: In front of the coast of Alhucemas (Morocco)

Calar Alto (CAHA) fireball detection station, together with the one at the Observatory of Sierra Nevada (IAA-CSIC) and others placed at different locations in Spain, are part of the S.M.A.R.T. project led by Professor José María Madiedo (IAA) to track that kind of objects. Specifically, Calar Alto (CAHA) station and the one at Sierra Nevada (IAA-CSIC) constitute a collaboration agreement between the IAA researcher José María Madiedo and both institutions.
