Fireball over Andalucía on October 26th 2016

This fireball was observed over the south of Spain at 1:57 local time of October 27th 2016 (23:57 UT of October 26th).

The analysis carried out by the SMART Project PI José María Madiedo (University of Huelva), points that el event was produced by a fragment detached from a comet (a meteoroid) that impact against our atmosphere with a speed around 94.000 km/h. The fireball starts at about 90 km above the province of Córdoba, moving southeastward flying over Granada and Málaga provinces, and finishing at an altitude of about 40 km over the Mediterranean Sea.

Calar Alto (CAHA) fireball detection station, together with the one at the Observatory of Sierra Nevada (IAA-CSIC) and others placed at different locations in Spain, are part of the S.M.A.R.T. project led by Professor José María Madiedo (University of Huelva) to track that kind of objects. Specifically, Calar Alto (CAHA) station and the one at Sierra Nevada (IAA-CSIC) constitute a collaboration agreement between Professor Madiedo and both institutions.
