
Last night, at 22h49 UT, a bright fireball crossed Cantabria (North of Spain) skies, more than 700 km away in a straight line from Calar Alto Observatory in Almería (South of Spain).
Even at this long distance, this event was registered with SMART detectors operated at Calar Alto Observatory, as well as with two of the external cameras of the observatory.
Together with Calar Alto, SMART Project’s detector located at La Hita (Toledo), Sierra Nevada (Granada), Seville and Sant Celoni, also registered this nice fireball.
Professor José María Madiedo (IAA-CSIC) has achieved the preliminary analysis, with the next results:
- Type of event: Asteroidal
- Initial speed: 72.000 km/h
- Initial altitude: 115 km
- Final altitude: 46 km
As shown in the image above, the bolide passed from northwest to southeast, near the town of Cabezón de la Sal in the autonomous community of Cantabria, in northern Spain.

Calar Alto (CAHA) fireball detection station, together with the one at the Observatory of Sierra Nevada (IAA-CSIC) and others placed at different locations in Spain, are part of the S.M.A.R.T. project led by Professor José María Madiedo (IAA) to track that kind of objects. Specifically, Calar Alto (CAHA) station and the one at Sierra Nevada (IAA-CSIC) constitute a collaboration agreement between the IAA researcher José María Madiedo and both institutions.
