Fireball in front of Morocco's Coast on August 21th 2017

This fireball could be observed last August 21th 2017 at 00:41:11 UT (02:41:11 local time). Although there are not enough reliable data in order to estimate the speed, its atmospheric path could be determined.

Following the analysis carried out by Professor José María Madiedo (University of Huelva), who is the PI of the SMART Project, this object flew over Morocco’s Coast entering the Mediterranean Sea. The fireball started at an altitude of 107 km above Morocco and it finished at an altitude of about 71 km above the Mediterranean Sea.

Calar Alto (CAHA) fireball detection station, together with the one at the Observatory of Sierra Nevada (IAA-CSIC) and others placed at different locations in Spain, are part of the S.M.A.R.T. project led by Professor José María Madiedo (University of Huelva) to track that kind of objects. Specifically, Calar Alto (CAHA) station and the one at Sierra Nevada (IAA-CSIC) constitute a collaboration agreement between Professor Madiedo and both institutions.
